Urticaria usually manifests itself in the form of puffy rashes on the skin. However, sometimes the picture we call angioedema, which goes with swelling in the tongue and trachea, can also accompany urticaria. In this case, urticaria may be quite dangerous. For this reason, urticaria patients should be closely monitored and emergency services should be contacted in case of shortness of breath.
Urticaria is usually acute, that is, it lasts less than six weeks. But sometimes it can become chronic. Chronic urticaria can last for months, years, and even a lifetime.
If what causes urticaria is known, it should be corrected as starters, and the factor should be eliminated. For example, if it is due to an infection, the infection should be treated, or if it is due to a drug/allergen, the drug or allergen should be avoided. In order to soothe the symptoms, drugs called antihistamines are used in the first place. In severe cases, cortisone therapy may also be needed.
Patients with urticaria can bathe as they normally do. However, sometimes urticaria conditions triggered by water or heat alone can be observed. In this case, which we call aquagenic urticaria, it is important to take a bath as your doctor advices.
Urticaria is not life-threatening, but it affects quality of life. Sometimes angioedema is accompanied by urticaria, in which case angioedema may pose a danger.
